About the Team

Bonny Doon Fire and Rescue is an all-volunteer fire company. This means that our firefighters do not get paid a salary, but it does not mean that they are anything less than professional! Every firefighter has undergone extensive training, including Structure and Wildland Firefighting, Emergency Medical Services, Vehicle Extrication, Hazardous Materials Operations, Confined Space Awareness, and much, much more! Each firefighter undergoes hundreds of hours of training prior to performing any emergency services for the community.

Most of our firefighters, and all of our officers are certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), some are professional Paramedics. Some team members are professional firefighters working in paid positions locally and in the greater Silicon Valley area.

Currently, there are 22 active members of the fire team. Five are company officers, four are driver/operators, six are firefighters, and we have seven active trainees.

Joining the Team

To become a firefighter, you must be at least 18 years of age. You must live within our primary response area. You must have a clean driving record. You must not be a convicted felon. Those are some of the legal requirements for the position. They're important, but the real key is your sense of community, and personal drive. If you can't handle yourself under normal conditions, you're probably going to fall to pieces in the high-stress emergency situations common to firefighting operations. Can you take orders? Can you adapt and overcome obstacles? Can you function well under life-threatening conditions? If so, then come to one of our training sessions, and we'll talk.

Reporting Structure

Bonny Doon Fire & Rescue is Santa Cruz County Fire (CRZ) Company 32, which is administered by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF).

Our training is generally conducted by our company officers at McDermott Station. Certification and training is also provided by CDF's Training Battalion.
